Apple Unveils World's Thinnest Notebook Computer
Apple chief executive Steve Jobs on Tuesday unveiled an ultra-slim MacBook Air laptop computer that he billed as the world's leanest laptop.
In trademark theatrical style at the Macworld Expo opening in San Francisco, Jobs slid the laptop from a brown envelope typically used for inter-office mail.
A packed audience of notoriously cultish "Macintosh faithful" whistled, hooted and cheered for the laptop which came with a price tag of 1,799 dollars.
"It's the world's thinnest notebook (computer)," Jobs said with a smile. "We went out and looked at all the thin notebooks out there and tried to distill a best-of-breed."
MacBook Air is a lean wedge-shape, .16 inches (.40 centimeters) thin at the front and .76 inches (1.9 centimeters) thick at the rear. Jobs compared it to some of the market's thinnest laptops measuring .8 inches (two centimeters) at one end and 1.2 inches (three centimeters) at the other.
MacBook Air could easily fit inside its thinnest competitor, a Sony model, Jobs said.
World-leading computer chip maker Intel shrunk one of its fast dual-core processors by 60 percent at Apple's urging to fit the power into MacBook Air, according to Jobs.
"When we started this project we didn't think it was possible," Intel chief executive Paul Otellini said, briefly joining Jobs on stage.
"There were times we sweated over it, but at the end of the day we innovated."
Macintosh computers sales have surged due to what analysts describe as a "halo effect" from the company's trendy iPod and iPhone models. Apple has been aggressively trying to capitalize on the company's cache.
On the crowded Macworld show floor, author Arnold Reinhold autographed copies of his book "Switching to Mac."
The book has made it into the Top Ten best selling titles at online retailer Amazon.com and is in its second printing since it debuted with the release of the new Macintosh Leopard operating system in October.
"There are a lot of people switching," Reinhold told AFP. "If you had a Mac, you used to get resistance from PC people. Now, you get questions."
Reinhold predicts MacBook Air will add momentum to the trend of computer users switching from Windows-based personal computers to Macintosh models.
"We're a minority, but a growing minority," Reinhold said of Macintosh users, who represent about ten percent of total computer ownership.
"Just wait until somebody with a MacBook Air walks into a meeting room where people are working on some clunky PC laptops. That should get even more folks thinking of switching."
Apple has shipped more than five million copies of its new Leopard operating system for Macintosh computers since it launched in late October, according to Jobs.
"The MacBook Air could kick-start the ultra-portable laptop market," said Creative Strategies analyst Tim Bajarin, noting that laptop models already constitute nearly half of Apple's flourishing Macintosh computer sales.
"The Air will be a big hit with the Mac faithful but also be something that attracts PC users."
Jobs pointed out that the lean laptops have easily recyclable aluminum casing and electronic components made from non-hazardous materials.
The segue was an effort to polish Apple's dim reputation among environmentalists who accuse the company of falling short when it comes to recycling used electronics and using Earth-friendly materials.
MacBook Air features innovations inspired by Apple's iPods and iPhone, according to Jobs.
For example, the compact hard drives in the laptops are the kind used in iPods, while touch pad controls in the computers mimic touch-screen "gesture" capabilities in iPhones.
"We learned from the iPhone and put it in our other computers," Jobs said.
MacBook Air notebooks weigh three pounds and have battery life of five hours. The ultra-lean laptops will begin shipping in two weeks, Jobs said.source: www.msn.com

Mobile Internet
After nearly ten years of promising us the Mobile Internet, 2008 should finally see it arrive in a meaningful way. From the extremely bad days of WAP to the disappointment of 3G, we have new technologies coming on stream that finally make Web browsing on your mobile a reality and not just a gimmick.
HSDPA has already brought mobile data rates into the Mbps range (I currently get 2.6Mbps on my T-Mobile connection in the UK), and this can only increase through 2008. More phones will support HSDPA in 2008, and also Wi-Fi as well, providing broadband data rates direct to your mobile. Better still, WiMAX phones should start to make an appearance, giving us even faster data rates.
These faster data rates have combined with fully functional browsers, such as Apple's Safari or Opera's mobile browser, which offer a proper desktop Web experience on your mobile. Add to this improved processing power, bigger memory, and (finally!) a willingness by the mobile operators to open up their networks, providing flat-rate data tariffs rather than charging by the byte, and you have the recipe for explosive growth of mobile Internet devices and services.
Google's Android platform can only help to accelerate this process, and so by the end of 2008, the mobile Internet will no longer be the painful experience it can be today, or the preserve of people lucky enough to have expensive smartphones.
This in turn will lead to an increase in the number of mobile services and applications that are developed to take advantage of the new mobile Internet devices. If 2007's Web was the year of the social network and Web 2.0, then 2008 should be the year of the Mobile Web.

Nokia E90 Communicator
The Nokia E series has gained a reputation as a mean set of power smartphones for business users. Just take a look at the Nokia E61i and the Nokia E65 if you need proof. And now, you've got the granddaddy of them all--the mammoth Nokia E90 Communicator. A descendant of the Nokia 9300, the E90 brings solid performance and more features--Wi-Fi, GPS, the latest Symbian operating system, and more--to the corporate customer. That said, we couldn't help but be disappointed by the lack of 3G support on the E90, and the omission is even tougher to swallow when you realize it will cost you about $1,100 (though you can probably find it for a couple of hundred dollars less online, but still) for an unlocked version of this handset. The Nokia E90 Communicator is a sharp device, but if you're looking for a comparable and more affordable solution, check out the AT&T Tilt.
Design
The Nokia E90 Communicator is a mammoth. The handset measures a whopping 5.2 inches tall by 2.2 inches wide by 0.7 inch deep and weighs 7.4 ounces, so you can pretty much forget about slipping this into a pants pocket, comfortably anyway. On the upside, the smartphone has a solid construction and looks like it could weather some rough treatment. It's also got a decidedly no-nonsense, corporate look, which suits its intended audience of power business users.
The exterior of the E90 features a 2-inch diagonal, 16 million color display with a 320x240 pixel resolution. It's not a touch screen, but text and images are vibrant and sharp. Below the screen, you'll find a standard navigation array of two soft keys, Talk and End buttons, a shortcut to the Main Menu, a four-way toggle with center select key, and the alphanumeric dialpad. This is one area where the phone's bigger size is an advantage since the extra room allows for large buttons that are easy to press.
Aside from roomy controls, there's another benefit to Nokia E90's bulkiness. The candy-bar-style phone opens up to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard and a 3.6-inch wide internal display. The latter has a 16 million color output and 800x352 pixel resolution that makes for an impressive view. The wide screen also lends itself really well for browsing Web sites and reading documents and e-mails. Also, flanking the screen is another set of Talk and End buttons and two soft keys.
The keyboard shouldn't give users too many problems as far as typing with ease and accuracy. The individual buttons are roomy, so it's not an issue that there isn't much spacing between them. They also have a tactile feel to them; our only complaint would be that they're a bit stiff to press. In addition, there's a dedicated number row, and right below the display, you will find shortcuts to various applications, including Contacts, Messaging, Web, and Calendar.
On the right spine, there's a voice-recorder button and a camera-activation key, while the bottom of the device has a mini USB port, a power connector, and a 2.5-millimeter headset jack. On the back you will find the 3.2-megapixel camera and flash, and a microSD expansion slot.
The Nokia E90 comes packaged with an AC adapter, a USB cable, a wired headset, a software CD, and reference material. For more add-ons, please check our cell phone accessories, ringtones, and help page.
Features
The Nokia E90 Communicator is a workhorse. The brainpower behind the smartphone is provided by Symbian OS 9.2, Series 60 3rd Edition and comes packed with a host of applications for the business user. There's full support for viewing and editing Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents thanks to the Quickoffice suite. The E90 also features the Nokia Team Suite, which we saw debut on the Nokia E65, and lets you create "teams" and define members, conference call numbers, conference call PINs, and Web pages.
Other utilities and PIM tools include Adobe Reader, a Zip Manager, a calendar, notes, a calculator, a clock, a voice recorder, and a currency converter. Of course, with the openness of the Symbian platform, you have access to a large library of third-party applications. There's Download Catalog on the device or you can check CNET Download.com for more titles. The Nokia E90 has 128MB of user-accessible memory and the microSD expansion slot can accept up to 2GB cards. taken from: CNET

iPhone finds favor with business users
Wireless carriers offering the iPhone may be concentrating their efforts on consumers, but research suggests they shouldn't neglect business users, who apparently love the touch-screen interface.
The Apple device beats the competition hands down when it comes to user-satisfaction rates, according to a survey of enterprise smartphone users in the U.K.
More than half (59 percent) of iPhone-owning business customers said they are "very satisfied" with the device, according to the survey, by emerging-technology research company ChangeWave Research.
Research In Motion's BlackBerry--which has the lion's share of the enterprise market--ranked second, with just under half (47 percent) of those surveyed being "very satisfied" with the device. Nokia came third (with 40 percent), followed by Samsung Electronics (30 percent), Motorola (25 percent), and Palm (10 percent).
"It is a very interesting launch product and, once it has settled into use, the price should become more realistic," said Alastair Behenna, chief information officer at IT-management specialist Harvey Nash. "If nothing else, it will act as a catalyst to other manufacturers, and the competitive evolution of the iPhone will definitely be worth keeping a watching brief on."
In the U.K., wireless carrier O2 UK recently told ZDNet UK that it is working with Apple on hammering out rates for business users. O2 said it is hopeful the fee schedule will launch at some point this year.

IE 8 Launch Soon...
A number of Microsoft enthusiasts this week received invitations to a “limited technical beta program” for Internet Explorer (IE) 8 Beta 1.
According to the invitation, Microsoft is planning to make IE 8 Beta 1 available to the general public, as well. But before that happens, an invitation-only tet program will be conducted. The invitation describes IE 8 Beta 1 being focused on developers.
(ActiveWin is running the full text of the note Microsoft sent to some IE 8 beta invitees this past week.)
Microsoft officials have said they plan to show off IE 8 at Microsoft’s Mix ‘08 conference in early March in Las Vegas. Officials also have said they are planning to add a developer-selectable “super-standards” mode to IE 8 that would enable the browser to qualify as more standards-compliant.
Microsoft still has not offered a final-delivery target date for IE 8. Microsoft released IE 7 in 2006. Microsoft officials have said they are shooting to deliver more frequent, regular builds of IE. from CNET

Adobe to launch AIR 1.0
Adobe Systems on Monday is set to finally release Adobe Integrated Environment software, which is on the leading edge of a movement to make Web applications act more like traditional desktop applications.
At the company's Engage event in San Francisco on rich Internet application design, executives will announce the availability of AIR 1.0, a free download for Windows and Macintosh.
Also on Monday, Adobe will release Flex 3.0, its application development tool that is now free and open-source. Another development tool, called BlazeDS, for linking Flex applications to back-end business applications,
Adobe has been working on AIR for at least two years, when Kevin Lynch, now Adobe's chief technology officer, first publicly spoke about it. The company plans to build AIR versions of many of its Web applications, including photo-imaging application Photoshop Express and Premier Express for editing video, he said.
AIR is software for making Web applications appear like more like desktop programs. Applications can run offline, access data on a person's hard drive, have a desktop icon, and run without the need of a browser.
Developers can use any Web development kit, such as Ajax frameworks, to write applications that will run on AIR or they can use Flex.
These Web-native desktop applications have become an active area of software development--Adobe says that there are over 100 AIR applications--and alternatives to AIR are starting to appear.
The Mozilla Foundation, makers of the Firefox Web browser, launched a
Lynch said that AIR is far ahead of what Prism offers but he expects many other platforms that bridge the Web with desktops to emerge.
"We're just getting back the lost treasures of the desktop that we lost when we went to the Web," Lynch said.
He said AIR is not competitive with Microsoft Windows or other operating systems; it's a layer above operating systems that enables people to use Web development techniques and toolkits.
A version of AIR for Linux is expected later this year, he said. Adobe will also create versions that run on mobile devices in the future. more>>HERE

When Does Blog Begin?
Before blogging became popular, digital communities took many forms, including Usenet, commercial online services such as GEnie, BiX and the early CompuServe, e-mail lists[2] and Bulletin Board Systems (BBS). In the 1990s, Internet forum software, such as WebEx, created running conversations with "threads". Threads are topical connections between messages on a metaphorical "corkboard". Some have likened blogging to the Mass-Observation project of the mid-20th century. This claim needs references to reliable sources since August 2007" taken from: wikipedia

One Missed Call
What will it sound like when you die?
In "One Missed Call," a chain of people receive terrifying cell phone messages of their own final fatal moments. Though the messages can be deleted, their number is up. Beth Raymond (Shannyn Sossamon) is traumatized when she witnesses the gruesome deaths of two friends just days apart. Even more disturbing, she knows that both of them had received chilling cell phone messages-actual recordings of their own horrifying last moments. Impossibly, the calls were received days before they died, but each death occurred precisely when and how the messages foretold. The police think Beth is delusional-except for Detective Jack Andrews (Edward Burns) whose own sister was killed in a freak accident that bears a strange similarity to the deaths of Beth's friends. Together, Jack and Beth work feverishly to unravel the mystery behind the ominous calls. But even as they get closer to the truth, Beth's cell phone begins to ring with an eerie tune, and the readout says "One Missed Call"...

"The Counterfeiters" ("Die Fälscher" in German) is the true story of the largest counterfeiting operation in history, set up by the Nazis in 1936. Salomon "Sally" Sorowitsch (Karl Markovics) is the king of counterfeiters. He lives a mischievous life of cards, booze, and women in Berlin during the Nazi-era. Suddenly his luck runs dry when arrested by Superintendent Friedrich Herzog (Devid Striesow). Immediately thrown into the Mauthausen concentration camp, Salomon exhibits exceptional skills there and is soon transferred to the upgraded camp of Sachsenhausen. Upon his arrival, he once again comes face to face with Herzog, who is there on a secret mission. Hand-picked for his unique skill, Salomon and a group of professionals are forced to produce fake foreign currency under the program Operation Berhard. The team, which also includes detainee Adolf Burger (August Diehl), is given luxury barracks for their assistance. But while Salomon attempts to weaken the economy of Germany's allied opponents, Adolf refuses to use his skills for Nazi profit and would like to do something to stop Operation Bernhard's aid to the war effort. Faced with a moral dilemma, Salomon must decide whether his actions, which could prolong the war and risk the lives of fellow prisoners, are ultimately the right ones.

"No Country For Old Men" won four major "2008 Oscars"
"No Country For Old Men" - The story, based on Cormac McCarthy's best selling novel, begins when Llewelyn Moss (JOSH BROLIN) finds a pickup truck surrounded by a sentry of dead men. A load of heroin and two million dollars in cash are still in the back. When Moss takes the money, he sets off a chain reaction of catastrophic violence that not even the law - in the person of aging, disillusioned Sheriff Bell (TOMMY LEE JONES) - can contain. As Moss tries to evade his pursuers - in particular a mysterious mastermind who flips coins for human lives (JAVIER BARDEM) - the film simultaneously strips down the American crime drama and broadens its concerns to encompass themes as ancient as the Bible and as bloodily contemporary as this morning's headlines.
"No Country For Old Men" won four major "2008 Oscars" - Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay.

Daniel Day-Lewis, No Country for Old Men Win Top Oscars
The 80th annual Academy Awards proved to be nothing if not international – honoring performers from Spain, England and France on Hollywood's big night Sunday.
Still, when the dust settled, it was the American neo-Western No Country for Old Men that took top honors at the Kodak Theatre ceremony. Besides being named Best Picture, the drama won Oscars for its Directors Joel and Ethan Coen, who were also honored for their Adapted Screenplay.
England was well represented – by Best Actor Daniel Day-Lewis, for There Will Be Blood, and Best Supporting Actress Tilda Swinton, for Michael Clayton. France's Marion Cotillard was named Best Actress for La Vie en Rose and Spain's Javier Bardem won Best Supporting Actor for No Country.
In all, the Coens' violent tale of a psychotic killer on the trail of drug money won four Oscars. The offbeat comedy Juno was cited for Best Original Screenplay.
For Day-Lewis, the night brought his second Oscar, this time for his role as a ruthless oilman. His first Oscar was for 1989's My Left Foot.
Accepting his Oscar from last's year's The Queen Best Actress winner Helen Mirren, Day-Lewis said, "That's the closest I'll ever come to getting a knighthood."

Ombud suspends ComVal councilman for mauling
A BARANGAY councilman was suspended for three months after he was accused of mauling a man who asked payment for the beer that he and his companions drank last May 8.
Gregorio C. Generale Jr., barangay councilman of Magnaga, Pantukan, Compostela Valley, was ordered suspended based on a decision penned by Graft Investigation Officer 11 Ma. Clarissa M. Muego dated August 14.
The charges stemmed from the complaint filed by Jonald Palma of Barangay Piape, Pantukan.
In his complaint, Palma claimed that last May 8, Generale was assigned as the ticket collector of a disco sponsored by the youth organization in celebration of barangay fiesta.
Around midnight, Generale and some friends allegedly went inside the disco house and allegedly ordered beer amounting to P600, promising to settle the bill later.
When Generale ordered his last beer, Palma asked for the payment but Generale allegedly got angry, prompting Palma to pour a glass of beer at him.
Generale allegedly handcuffed, mauled and dragged Palma, resulting to injuries all over his body.
Generale left the place afterwards, while relatives took Palma to the police station for safety.
In his counter-affidavit, Generale denied mauling and handcuffing Palma. He claimed he did not have a handcuff in his possession, as he is not a police officer.
He said he saw Palma 50 meters away from the place the disco was held, being handcuffed by an unidentified man, as Palma was very drunk.
Palma insisted in his reply-affidavit that the handcuff of the barangay council of Magnaga was in Generale's possesion as certified by the barangay secretary.
Both parties were called to a preliminary conference on July 24, but both parties failed to attend. Both also failed to submit their position papers after the lapse of time prescribed, so the case was submitted for decision on the basis of evidence on record.
After evaluation, the Ombudsman was unconvinced of Generale's position. Palma also reported the incident immediately after it occurred, therefore Palma did not have time to fabricate it.
In fact, Palma had to travel from Magnaga to the Ombudsman Office in Davao City on the morning of May 9 to seek assistance to remove his handcuff and to file the complaint.
Pantukan municipal mayor Jovito D. Derla was directed to enforce Generale's suspension and to show a proof of compliance of the order within ten days upon finality of the decision. RCB

Arroyo: We all know I am not perfect
Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said Sunday she knows she's not perfect but warned her rivals that an attempt to oust her in a "people's power" revolt would damage her country's image and repel foreign investment.
Arroyo's comments came as opposition and left-wing groups prepared to commemorate today a 1986 popular uprising that toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos. The groups planned to stage protests in 15 cities to demand Arroyo's resignation following a slew of corruption scandals that have rocked her seven-year rule.
Police, troops and tanks assembled in central Manila to ensure security during the protests, amid fresh rumors of a possible coup. Military and police leaders have reiterated their loyalty to the chain of command and warned their men from backing any anti-government activity.excerpt from TOPIX
On my point of view, the president's strategy were pabalik balik lang, remember when in the middle of "Hello Garci" scandal, the president is asking "I am sorry" with all humility? now again, dahil alam nilang namimiligro na naman ang goberno, gumagamit na naman sila ng strategy and maka gain ng sympathy of the people. Kapal talaga ng mukha ng mga ito.

Teardrops On My Guitar
Drew looks at me, I fake a smile so he won't see
That I want and I'm needing everything that we should be
I'll bet she's beautiful, that girl he talks about
And she's got everything that I have to live without
Drew talks to me, I laugh cause it's so damn funny
That I can't even see anyone when he's with me
He says he's so in love, he's finally got it right,
I wonder if he knows he's all I think about at night
[Chorus:]
He's the reason for the teardrops on my guitar
The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star
He's the song in the car I keep singing, don't know why I do
Drew walks by me, can he tell that I can't breathe?
And there he goes, so perfectly,
The kind of flawless I wish I could be
She'd better hold him tight, give him all her love
Look in those beautiful eyes and know she's lucky cause
[Repeat Chorus]
So I drive home alone, as I turn out the light
I'll put his picture down and maybe
Get some sleep tonight
He's the reason for the teardrops on my guitar
The only one who's got enough of me to break my heart
He's the song in the car I keep singing, don't know why I do
He's the time taken up, but there's never enough
And he's all that I need to fall into..
Drew looks at me, I fake a smile so he won't see.

Penelope
"Penelope" is the story of a young woman, Penelope Wilhern (Christina Ricci), born to wealthy socialites (Richard E. Grant and Catherine O'Hara).
"Penelope" is afflicted by a secret family curse that can only be broken when she is loved by one of her own kind. Hidden away in the family's majestic home, she is subjected to meeting a string of blue-bloods through her parent's futile attempt to marry her off and break the curse. Each suitor is instantly enamored with "Penelope" (and her sizable dowry)... until the curse is revealed.
When a willing mate cannot be found, mischievous tabloid reporter Lemon (Peter Dinklage) hires Max (James McAvoy) to pose as a prospective suitor in hopes of snapping a photo of the mysterious "Penelope." Max, who is really a down-on-his-luck gambler, finds himself drawn to "Penelope" and not wanting to expose or disappoint her, disappears and leaves Lemon in the lurch. Fed up by this latest betrayal and determined to live life on her own terms, Penelope breaks free from her family and goes out into the world in search of adventure - curse be damned.
The feature filmmaking debut of director Mark Palansky, "Penelope" was produced by Reese Witherspoon - "Penelope."
Originally scheduled for a Spring 2007 release, and then an August 17, 2007 release, "Penelope," well, her future, was in jeopardy. Until Rob Friedman, CEO of Summit Entertainment, saved the film and snatched it up. "Penelope" is now scheduled for a February 29, 2008 release.

Diary Of The Dead
"Diary Of The Dead" is an independent horror film written, produced and directed by famed "Dead" saga director George A. Romero.
According to Romero, "Diary Of The Dead" is not the fifth film chronologically in director George A. Romero's "Dead" movie series. However, in "an attempt to reestablish a lucrative franchise, "Diary Of The Dead" is, technically and philosophically, a reboot of the myth.
Even though the fourth "Dead" film was studio produced through Universal Studios, "Diary of the Dead" was produced by Romero's and his producer friend Peter Grunwald's Romero-Grunwald Productions with Artfire Films and will be released stateside by Voltage Pictures.
The "Diary Of The Dead" plot involves a group of film school students who are filming a horror movie in the wilderness, and are attacked by zombies. It takes place during the same night as Night of the Living Dead. It gives a new perspective on the whole phenomenon as the students learn about the zombies through first-hand experience as opposed to the people locked up in the farmhouse in the first "Dead" film, "Night of the Living Dead."

Definitely Maybe
- Ryan Reynolds, (not to be confused with Ryan Gosling), stars as Will Hayes, a 30-something Manhattan dad in the midst of a divorce when his 10 year-old daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin), starts to question him about his life before marriage. Maya wants to know absolutely everything about how her parents met and fell in love. Will's story begins in 1992, as a young, starry-eyed aspiring politician who moves to New York from Wisconsin in order to work on the Clinton campaign. For Maya, Will relives his past as an idealistic young man learning the ins and outs of big city politics, and recounts the history of his romantic relationships with three very different women.
Will hopelessly attempts a "PG" version of his story for his daughter and changes the names so Maya has to guess who is the woman her father finally married. Is her mother Will's college sweetheart, the dependable girl next-door Emily (Elizabeth Banks)? Is she his longtime best friend and confidante, the apolitical April (Isla Fisher)? Or is she the free-spirited but ambitious journalist Summer (Rachel Weisz)?
As Maya puts together the pieces of her dad's romantic puzzle, she begins to understand that love is not so simple or easy. And as Will tells her his tale, Maya helps him to understand that it's definitely never too late to go back...and maybe even possible to find a happy ending.
The reversed story of "Mamma Mia The Movie" but a few months earlier and without Meryl Streep and the music.
STARRING: Ryan Reynolds, Abigail Breslin, Isla Fisher, Elizabeth Banks, Rachel Weisz
DIRECTOR: Adam Brooks

Spring Waltz...Lost Without Your Love
Last week my favorite koreanovela ends, of course most of the love story ends with an happy ending, what I liked about the movie was the story, and its soundtrack, I love their soundtrack every time the song played (mostly in instrumental). It is originally sung by “The Bread” though they translate it into their own language (Korean) I love Song very much. “Lost Without Your Love” I dedicate this song to my one and only love of a lifetime…

"The Eye"
"The Eye" - Sydney Wells (Jessica Alba) is an accomplished, independent, Los Angeles-based concert violinist. She is also blind, and has been so since a childhood tragedy. As our story opens, Sydney undergoes a double corneal transplant, a surgery she has waited her whole life to have, and her sight is restored. After the surgery, neural ophthalmologist Dr. Paul Faulkner (Alessandro Nivola) helps Sydney with the difficult adjustment, and with the support of her older sister Helen (Parker Posey), Sydney learns to see again. But Sydney's happiness is short-lived as unexplainable shadowy and frightening images start to haunt her. Are they a passing aftermath of her surgery, Sydney's mind adjusting to sight, a product of her imagination, or something horrifyingly real? As Sydney's family and friends begin to doubt her sanity, Sydney is soon convinced that her anonymous eye donor has somehow opened the door to a terrifying world only she can now see.
"The Eye" is a bone-chilling supernatural thriller that tests the boundaries of perception and reality.
STARRING: Jessica Alba, Alessandro Nivola, Parker Posey, Francois Chau, Tamlyn Tomita
DIRECTORS: David Moreau, Xavier Palud

"When Did You Last See Your Father?"
"When Did You Last See Your Father?" - Arthur Morrison (Jim Broadbent), and his wife Kim (Juliet Stevenson), are GPs in the same medical practice in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. They have two children, Gillian (Claire Skinner), and her older brother Blake (Colin Firth), from whose perspective the story is told. Blake is 40, married with two children, an established author, and having to face the fact that his father is terminally ill. The film opens during a summer bank holiday family trip in the late 1950s. Arthur hits the hard shoulder to skip a long queue of traffic at a car racing event, and eight year old Blake, and the rest of the family, are crippled with embarrassment. It's the first of many flashbacks that illustrate Arthur's bluff attitude to life and his pride in getting something for nothing. These childhood episodes also introduce Beaty (Sarah Lancashire) and her daughter, Josie. It soon becomes clear that Beaty and Arthur are more than just friends and that Josie is potentially Arthur's child. Adult Blake strives to find out the truth about Josie, and in doing so uncovers the interesting parameters of his father's marriage. The essence of this father and son relationship is further expressed through flashbacks to Blake's teens - a family holiday, a fumbled affair with the au pair - where the awkward and introverted Blake is constantly crushed by his father's flirtatious ways and need to be the centre of attention. There are happy and tender memories too; of Arthur teaching Blake to drive, a camping trip in the rain, and Arthur saying goodbye to Blake as he leaves for university. In the present it becomes clear that Arthur still dominates his grown-up son, a dynamic to which Blake is resigned much to his wife, Kathy's (Gina McKee) annoyance. But when he and his family confront the reality of Arthur's cancer, Blake is forced to reconcile himself with the past. Blake's recollections are interspersed with heart-rending and often uncompromising scenes of Arthur's decline and submission to the disease that is killing him. It is ironic that Arthur's battle with his failing health is paralleled by Blake's struggle to come to terms with their relationship but there's a human inevitability here we can all identify with. It is only after Arthur's death; only when the tears come, that Blake is finally able to make peace with his memories.
STARRING: Colin Firth, Jim Broadbent, Juliet Stevenson, Gina Mckee
DIRECTOR: Anand Tucker

The Ruins
"The Ruins" - In the movie "The Ruins," six twenty-something friends on vacation in Cancun go on an excursion to visit an archaeological dig near Coba. The friends include Jeff (Jonathan Tucker), a type A guy who is set to begin medical school in the fall; Amy, Jeff's girlfriend, who is also set to begin medical school, and who is smart and emotional; Stacy, Amy's best friend, an aspiring social worker whose nickname is "Spacy" and who is irresponsible and promiscuous; Eric, Stacy's boyfriend, who is immature, and set to become a high school teacher; a fun-loving Greek guy who everyone calls "Pablo," but who lacks a common language with any of the others; and Mathias, an intense, thoughtful German tourist. Mathias' brother, Henrich, vanished shortly before the Americans and Greeks met Mathias--he met a beautiful Dutch archaeologist and decided to meet her at her dig, leaving a hastily drawn map for Mathias to follow in case he wanted to join him. The five others decide to accompany Mathias in his search for his brother, and take a bus to Coba for the day. Things immediately start to go wrong, as the group isn't well prepared for the heat and insects, and the journey becomes creepy. The poorly drawn map leads them to a Mayan village, where the grievously poor inhabitants appear hostile to the foreigners. Further searching leads them to an almost-hidden trail that they follow to the ruins. Gun, rifle, and bow-and-arrow wielding Mayan villagers force them to climb onto a large hill covered in vines and red flowers, and block their path off the mountain. The situation turns increasingly disturbing as they find Henrich's corpse, covered in the vine and flowers. Further investigation uncovers numerous other corpses covered in the plant, and the plant, it turns out, secretes an acidic sap that burns them all. Under the hill is a mine, and a ringing cell phone at the bottom lures Pablo, but the rope breaks and he falls, sustaining a broken back. Eric is injured slightly trying to rescue him. Gradually, the group discovers that the vine is sentient and carnivorous. It begins luring them to their deaths, one by one. It can mimic perfectly the voices of others, and uses this ability to separate the others, who are suffering from hunger and thirst. A drunk Amy is the first to go, strangled by the plant while Jeff, angry at her, ignores her struggles, which he mistakes for drunken sickness. Pablo's legs are eaten by the plant, and Jeff and Henrich then amputate them. The plant enters Eric's wound and, though they remove it, Eric insists it's still inside him, and he repeately cuts himself in an effort to get it out. Jeff is able to hold the group together to a certain extent, always with new ideas about how to conquer their challenges. But he is ultimately killed by the villagers' arrows while trying to sneak past them. Airheaded Stacy leaves Pablo unattended, and the plant kills and eats him. Eric flays himself alive trying to remove the plant, and then kills Mathias with his knife in a delusional accident. With only Eric and Stacy left, Eric begs her to kill him and put him out of his misery, which she ultimately does. Then, she decides to leave her dead body as a warning for others, and slashes her wrists on the path at the base of the hill. But the plant moves her away, just as it did other warning signs put up by other victims. The Mayans leave. Three days later, Pablo's Greek friends, with a few Brazilians, climb onto the hill ("The Ruins") to seek out their traveling companion, bringing several others with them."The Ruins" is based on the Scott Smith novel of the same name - a NY Times Best Seller. Scott Smith is also the author of "A Simple Plan," a 1998 Oscar nominee directed by Sam Raimi (also the director of the first three "Spiderman" films).
STARRING: Jonathan Tucker, Laura Ramsey, Jena Malone, Shawn Ashmore
DIRECTOR: Carter Smith
WRITER: Scott Smith
